Spring is awakening

The days are getting longer and the sun is gaining strength week to week. Nature and the garden wakes from hibernation: many flower bulbs delight us from January to May with an incredible variety.

Due to the milder winter and the high temperatures in February and March, many perennials and shrubs have already developed strongly. The current cold nights are threatening for some plant species. As a rule, however, these are very robust, even if some shoots are damaged by the frost. This is different in part for Mediterranean plants that do not tolerate frost at all. Basically: water plants well, evergreen e.g. Camellias, protect against the morning sun.

How do I care for the lawn?

In the spring, your lawn is happy with a kick start  of fertiliser with plenty of nitrogen: it ensures rapid growth and lush green stalks. In summer a second fertiliser application emphasizing nitrogen. In the autumn the lawn should be given an extra dose of potassium. It strengthens the stalk structure and makes the grass plants resistant to winter. Appropriate lawn fertilizers are commercially available.

For the very best lawn, I recommend scarifying it twice (leveling the turf) and aerating it once (aerating the soil). Weed control depending on requirements and use. In playgrounds for toddlers, I recommend fighting white clover because of the many bees.

Now I wish you a great garden year.
